THE southern hemisphere’s biggest and fastest rollercoaster will open at Movie World today as the Gold Coast theme park tries to win back patrons spooked by last year’s disaster at rival Dreamworld.
The $30 million DC Rivals HyperCoaster sends riders hurtling at up to 115km/h through a 1.4km-long, 61m-high series of looping twists and turns.
It’s the first big-ticket theme park attraction to open on the Gold Coast since the Dreamworld tragedy last October when four tourists were killed on the Thunder River Rapids ride.
The disaster sent Glitter Strip theme park attendances plummeting by as much as 30 per cent and numbers are still recovering.
Clark Kirby, chief executive of Movie World owner Village Roadshow Theme Parks, said the German-made HyperCoaster was the company’s biggest-ever investment in an attraction and the most expensive in Australia.
He said it was the longest, fastest and highest rollercoaster in the southern hemisphere and would be a “game-changer” for the theme park industry. -couriermail
