Spaceship Earth to Close for Two Years, Through Walt Disney World's 50th Anniversary.

The iconic golf ball geodesic dome at EPCOT is to be closed for extensive work to be done in and around the structure, reports wdwnt.com.  The remodel and overhaul of the ride is expected to begin in early 2020, so don't run down to get your last ride in just yet, you've still got plenty of time. It's another major step towards Disney's plan of making the park "more timeless, more relevant, more family friendly, and more Disney."
At 2017's D23 Expo, plans were revealed for Project Gamma, a major overhaul of the Future World section of EPCOT. This concept art was part of the release and features major changes for the entrance of EPCOT. (D23 is the official Disney fan club celebrating the wonder and excitement of Disney)
The geodesic dome is expected to be closed down in early 2020, and reopen in time for EPCOT's 40th anniversary on October 1, 2022. "Disney will use this opportunity to extend the length of the attraction with new load and unload areas that may not be in the same places that they are now. It also sounds like the current post-show building that houses Project Tomorrow will be removed and an entirely new structure built." -wdwnt.com

The current entrance of Spaceship Earth is directly underneath the structure. Moving this queue and entrance could give an entire different feeling to the entrance of the park, opening more path space and allowing more guests to walk directly underneath the giant sphere.
The Spaceship Earth ride is the flagship ride of the park, so a rehab of this magnitude is no easy feat. The ride is meant to capture the tone of the EPCOT experience as you enter, and the storyline has input from some of the world's greatest talents, from author Ray Bradbury, to Judi Dench and Bruce Boughton.  "Boughton conducted a 63-piece orchestra and 24-voice choir for his musical score. If you listen closely, you’ll notice that the music for each scene features styles and instruments appropriate to the era, transitioning seamlessly into the next—no small feat." -Disney

Currently the exit of Spaceship Earth features "Project Tomorrow," a series of interactive exhibits.
Spaceship Earth will have a refresh of all scenes during the ride, "sources also indicate that the scene in the dome at the top of the attraction where guests look back at Earth from space will be drastically reimagined utilizing the latest in projection mapping technologies." -wdwnt.com

  1. This needs an overhaul! It's so outdated! Good! the weird cartoon image and screen just don't feel right for a park that is supposed to be futuristic.
